When I was growing up, one of the things I thought every kid knew was campfire songs. Some of my earliest memories are being around a campfire at my family's cottage on Honeoye Lake (in the Finger Lakes of New York State) and singing. Our family friend (and shirt tale cousin... AND Saralyn's Dad... man, she knows how to work her way in here!!), Bruce, would have his guitar and we would all sing. I couldn't believe it as I aged and learned that there are people in the world who didn't do that exact thing and don't know these classics:
Three Chartreuse Buzzards
Up In the Air, Junior Birdman
He's Got the Whole World (In His Hands)
She'll Be Comin' Round The Mountain
Shine Your Buttons with Brasso
The Very Unfortunate Man
(These last 2 were sung by Bruce and we would all come in with the chorus... I don't really remember the words but I know for sure they were border-line not kid-appropriate! All the better!!!)
My mom, the sun around which all of the summers-at-the-cottage-and-subsequent-campfire-stuff revolved, is on her way tomorrow and I'm so excited! My dad and my niece (Asia, almost 8) and nephew (Calvin, just turned 6) are making the trip, too. This is Asia & Calvin's first trip to our house. Last night in the shower I was thinking about how she'd be coming over mountains and around lakes and, naturally, a little song built itself in my head:
She'll be coming over the mountains on Tuesday (Ya hoo!)
She'll be coming over the mountains on Tuesday (Ya hoo!)
She'll be coming over the mountains,
She'll be coming over the mountains,
She'll be coming over the mountains on Tuesday (Ya hoo!)
She'll be riding with Asia & Calvin on Tuesday (Dad, too!)
She'll be riding with Asia & Calvin on Tuesday (Dad, too!)
She'll be riding with Asia & Calvin,
She'll be riding with Asia & Calvin,
She'll be riding with Asia & Calvin on Tuesday (Dad, too! Ya hoo!)
Oh, we'll stay up past our bedtime on Tuesday (snore, snore)
Oh, we'll stay up past our bedtime on Tuesday (snore, snore)
Oh, we'll stay up past our bedtime
Oh, we'll stay up past our bedtime
Oh, we'll stay up past our bedtime on Tuesday (snore, snore; Dad, too!, Ya hoo!)
Oh, I'll bet she'll bring some chocolate on Tuesday (and wine!)
Oh, I'll bet she'll bring some chocolate on Tuesday (and wine!)
Oh, I'll bet she'll bring some chocolate
Oh, I'll bet she'll bring some chocolate
Oh, I'll bet she'll brings some chocolate on Tuesday (and wine! snore, snore; Dad, too!, Ya hoo!)
We'll get pizza from the Pine Cone on Tuesday (yum, yum)
We'll get pizza from the Pine Cone on Tuesday (yum, yum)
We'll get pizza from the Pine Cone
We'll get pizza from the Pine Cone
We'll get pizza from the Pine Cone on Tuesdsay (yum, yum; and wine! snore, snore; Dad, too!, Ya hoo!)
Oh, we'll have to keep the house clean till Tuesday (sweep, sweep)
Oh, we'll have to keep the house clean till Tuesday (sweep, sweep)
Oh, we'll have to keep the house clean
Oh, we'll have to keep the house clean
Oh, we'll have to keep the house clean till Tuesday (sweep, sweep; yum yum; and wine!; snore, snore; Dad, too!, Ya hoo!)
What's your favorite campfire song?
She will have to sleep with Grandpa when she comes...
